HAC Corrections for Strongly Autocorrelated Time Series∗

چکیده

Applied work routinely relies on heteroskedasticity and autorcorrelation consistent (HAC) standard errors when conducting inference in a time series setting. As is well known, however, these corrections perform poorly in small samples under pronounced autocorrelations. In this paper, I first provide a review of popular methods to clarify the reasons for this failure. I then derive inference that remains valid under a specific form of strong dependence. In particular, I assume that the long-run properties can be approximated by a stationary Gaussian AR(1) model, with coefficient arbitrarily close to one. In this setting, I derive tests that come close to maximizing a weighted average power criterion. Small sample simulations show these tests to perform well, also in a

Size and power of tests of stationarity in highly autocorrelated time series

Tests of stationarity are routinely applied to highly autocorrelated time series. Following Kwiatkowski et al. (J. Econom. 54 (1992) 159), standard stationarity tests employ a rescaling by an estimator of the long-run variance of the (potentially) stationary series. This paper analytically investigates the size and power properties of such tests when the series are strongly autocorrelated in a ...

Contouring of cranial vault irregularities with hydroxyapatite cement: a clinical and experimental investigation.

The biocompatible hydroxyapatite cement (HAC) is a welcome alternative to the traditional use of autogenous bone for postoperative corrections of cranial vault irregularities. The authors performed experimental studies to show the safety and osseointegration capacity of HAC on animal models and confirm the osseous replacement without toxic reactions. The purpose of the current study was to anal...

Pipelined HAC Estimation Engines for Multivariate Time Series

Heteroskedasticity and autocorrelation consistent (HAC) covariance matrix estimation, or HAC estimation in short, is one of the most important techniques in time series analysis and forecasting. It serves as a powerful analytical tool for hypothesis testing and model verification. However, HAC estimation for long and high-dimensional time series is computationally expensive. This paper describe...

HMM in dynamic HAC models

Understanding the dynamics of high dimensional non-normal dependency structure is a challenging task. This research aims at attacking this problem by building up a hidden Markov model (HMM) for Hierarchical Archimedean Copulae (HAC), where the HAC represent a wide class of models for high dimensional dependency, and HMM is a statistical technique to describe time varying dynamics. HMM applied t...

Changepoint Detection in Periodic and Autocorrelated Time Series

Undocumented changepoints (inhomogeneities) are ubiquitous features of climatic time series. Level shifts in time series caused by changepoints confound many inference problems and are very important data features. Tests for undocumented changepoints from models that have independent and identically distributed errors are by now well understood. However, most climate series exhibit serial autoc...
